Teegan

“Say what?” Mat’s eyes look like they might pop out of her head after I explain to everyone that the guy in the wetsuit in the garden earlier wasn’t a fluke. She’s only half listening, but apparently, she heard enough to be startled and ask a cogent question, even if I’m not certain she could pay attention to the answer.

“I thought he was a reject who escaped from another island,” muses Dorf, a much more with-it shifter, as he scratches his crooked nose. “Are you sure?” His bright brown eyes are skeptical as he cocks his head and gazes at me.

Jake stands next to me, holding my hand as we face the ‘elders’ of the island in the cafeteria. The big room has been cleared out after lunch, and we’re down at the end of the table near the kitchen. The whine of the fridge carries from the room next door. The appliance is on its last legs but keeps limping along because of Dorf’s mechanical know-how. Part of me wishes it would go out so that I can avoid this conversation. My cheeks blush hot as the elders stare at me skeptically, wondering why the hell anyone would want to kill me, wondering what makes me so important.

The thing is…I’m not.

This whole thing doesn’t make sense, and yet, it’s happening and I’m dragging these poor misfit shifters into it. The three shifters who are responsible for the sole New Moon cell phone are included at the table, as well as Dorf and Mat—even though her sanity is clearly slipping day by day. Even now, as she sits at the table and participates in the conversation, she’s picking at her skin as if she’s covered in bugs.

“That guy today is the second attacker who’s come after Teegan,” Jake responds on my behalf, saving me from having to explain. “I took care of the first guy the day she arrived. First one used a knife, but I found a water-logged gun on the beach. I’m guessing his ammo was ruined in the swim over. His gun dried out. It works now—I used it this morning to kill assassin number two.”

“Where’d you get bullets?” Dorf asks.

Cass smacks his chest. “Don’t be an insensitive prick. You know where.”

I turn to Jake, confused, because while Cass might understand why he has a gun… “I don’t.”

He responds with a single word. “Ali.”

Oh. Sadness pools in my chest at the thought of our former luna.

“But…but who would want to kill a reject?” Dorf breaks the solemn moment with his question, his forehead creasing as he lays a hand on the table. The older man looks genuinely confused, chewing on his lip as he tries to wrap his head around this strange reality.

“Everybody wants to kill rejects,” Mat responds, sounding far more together than she looks, as she continues to pick off and squish imaginary ants with a vengeance.

“Yeah, that’s why they send us here, because they’d feel too guilty if they actually killed us off,” Cass agrees with Mat, her hazel eyes troubled.
